How to Fix an LG Refrigerator Leaking Water

Henry G.

Cleaning up a messy LG refrigerator leak can be just as frustrating as trying to find its source. What causes a refrigerator to leak water? It may not be level, making it work harder and create extra condensation that falls on the floor. Try adjusting the legs so the refrigerator is leveled properly. Troubleshoot more reasons for an LG refrigerator leaking water with these quick ways to pinpoint the problem.

How to Fix an LG Refrigerator Leaking Water

Is Your LG Refrigerator Leaking? This May Be Why

While some leaks may be due to a part malfunction, others can be resolved with a simple adjustment or DIY fix. We’ll specify the most likely causes for an LG refrigerator leaking water along with the right solutions.

Refrigerator Not Level

Though it may not be your first thought, a refrigerator leaking water on the floor might not be leveled properly. For coolant to flow correctly, the refrigerator must be slightly higher in the front than the back. If this isn’t the case, coolant can pool in areas, causing the refrigerator to work harder. This creates extra condensation on the condenser coils that can leak onto the floor.

Place a leveling tool front to back on the floor of the refrigerator to make sure it’s slightly higher in the front. If it’s not, consult your owner’s manual to determine how to access the refrigerator legs and adjust them to the correct heights.

Water Supply Issues

Leaks may also be due to a water line issue. This line connects your refrigerator to your home’s water supply so it has access to water. To access the water line, turn off the power to your refrigerator and move it away from the wall.

Here’s how to assess for an LG refrigerator water line leak :

  • Check for kinks or bends : These can create air pockets, causing a buildup of pressure that results in leaks. Gently reposition the line to remove the kink and dispense and dispose of 2-3 gallons of water to flush air.
  • Tighten loose connections : Leaks may occur if the water line hose connection to your water supply or refrigerator is loose. Use a wrench to tighten the valves at both connection points.
  • Examine water inlet valve : This valve opens and closes to allow water to flow to the refrigerator as needed. If you still see water leaking from the valve after tightening the connection, it may be faulty and require replacement.

Refrigerator Water Filter Leaking

If the water filter is leaking, you may see your LG refrigerator dripping water directly from the dispenser.

These are common causes for a leaky refrigerator water filter :

  • Incorrect installation
  • Screen is clogged with debris
  • Filter is defective
  • Using a generic, non-OEM filter

Check your user manual to make sure your water filter is installed correctly, repositioning it if necessary. If the filter is old and clogged with debris or appears cracked or defective, replace it to resolve the leak.

We also recommend that you always use name-brand (OEM) replacement water filters for your refrigerator model. Generic filters may save you a few bucks, but they’re also much more likely to cause leaks due to poor construction and not fitting securely in the filter housing.

Defrost Drain Clogged

The defrost drain carries water from the defrost system to the drain pan below the refrigerator. Sometimes, lingering water droplets in the drain can freeze, creating clogs that prohibit water from flowing. When this happens you may notice leaks underneath the produce or deli drawers, as the drain runs behind these areas. You may also find that your LG refrigerator won’t defrost properly or there are refrigerator cooling issues due to this defrost system problem.

The ice in the defrost drain must be melted to allow water to flow and stop the leak. Consult your user manual to determine the location of the drain. Then use a funnel or turkey baster to flush it with warm water and dispel the clog.

Defective Refrigerator Drain Pan

In rare instances, a defective drain pan could be the reason for your LG refrigerator leaking water. This pan collects condensation and defrost system water, enabling it to evaporate. However, if the pan is cracked or broken, water may spill onto the floor before it’s able to evaporate. Too much water in the pan can also cause spillage and leaks.

Check your user manual to determine the best way to access the pan underneath your refrigerator. Remove the pan and empty the water if it’s close to overflowing. If the pan is damaged, it requires replacement.
